Meet Dr. Michaela Ambrosius

NY 005493-1 Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

NJ 37PC00737900 Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

I am a multilingual (German, Italian, Spanish, French) mental health service provider and have been working in clinical settings since 2011. I received my master’s degree in mental health counseling from Hunter College and my Ph.D. in counselor education from Montclair State University, where I now teach as part of their adjunct faculty. My clinical interests include trauma-informed care, multicultural diversity, female empowerment, and spirituality.

In the last five years, I have specialized in trauma therapy, supporting individuals with complex trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Logotherapy, Internal Family Systems (IFT), and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP). SP is a counseling approach for trauma. It is a holistic approach that views the body as an important source of information.

I formerly provided bilingual (English-Spanish) supervision to counselors in training at Hunter College. My counseling and supervision approach is based on Logotherapy and existential therapy as well as the current multicultural and social justice competencies endorsed by the American Counseling Association. My research interests include ethnic identity development, acculturation issues, immigration, antisemitism, and existential dilemmas such as isolation, death, and meaninglessness. I have presented on these topics at a variety of national and regional conferences.
